| | | | Tiffany Stained Glass | The popular stained glass artwork style found in lamps, windows, panels, doors and other items is commonly referred to as Tiffany Stained Glass. Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933), for whom the name Tiffany Stained Glass was coined, was an American artist and designer whose name is synonymous with the Art Nouveau era. He used and promoted the copper foil method of stained glass construction that is so popular today. Louis Comfort Tiffany was known for his outstanding quality and beautiful works of art and for refining and popularizing this ancient method of stained glass artwork that is world renowned today.
There is a certain mystery to glass: It captures light and glows from within. It is a jewel like substance made from the most ordinary materials: sand transformed by fire.
Before the Tiffany Glass Company began, stained glass artwork had a very long and relatively unknown history. Stained glass panels have been found that are nearly 2,000 years old. Single stained glass panels were discovered in the remains of ancient Pompeii. Pompeii was destroyed in a volcanic eruption of Mount Vesuvius around 79 A.D. Many of the artifacts that were found in the ruins of Pompeii are in museums throughout the world especially in Naples, Italy. Also, stained glass artwork like we are familiar with was also used in religious settings as early as 11 A.D. in Europe.
Stained glass, or more appropriate art glass, is all around us today. An explosion of interest in the last 30 years has give rise to many new and imaginative forms of this art. New artists are combining, creating and developing unique new forms and styles every day. We are happy to bring to you some of these beautiful works of art through The Crystal Pineapple.
